Do you suffer from Gout?

Gout is an inflammatory Arthritis causing pain and swelling in the joints and is most commonly seen in the 1st metatarsal (Big Toe) area of the foot. It is caused by uric acid buildup and crystallization in the soft tissue/joint. If you suffer from Gout you will know that it often comes on suddenly and is extremely painful, and the joint is usually red and visibly swollen. Flare ups/Attacks can occur and usually last 1-2 weeks. However, if you have had gout flare ups in the past it is more likely that you can have more chronic attacks in the future. Chronic flare-ups of gout can unfortunately cause permanent damage to the joint causing restricted movement, chronic pain and poor walking mechanics.

Treatment Options

The good news is that if you suffer from Gout there are some treatment options to help keep the pain and frequency of flare ups to a minimum. There are medications that can be prescribed by your Doctor to help balance uric acid levels in the bloodstream. Gout attacks can also be well controlled by diet. Sugary foods, alcohol, high fat foods, and red meat can all contribute to increased uric acid in the bloodstream and increase the frequency of gout attacks.

If past gout attacks have caused permanent damage to the joint Orthotics and Footwear can be helpful in managing pain. The overall goal of these products is to reduce force through the Arthritic joint to prevent further pain and inflammation.
