Capsulitis (Inflamed Toe Joint)

Capsulitis is an injury resulting in inflammation to the ligaments that surround the joint at the base of a toe. The second toe is by far the most common affected digit, although capsulitis can sometimes develop in the third and fourth toes as well. Capsulitis falls under the umbrella of Metatarsalgia which is a catch all term for pain in the ball of the foot.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain within the base of the metatarsal joint most commonly the 2nd metatarsal head.
  • Has a feeling of a bunched up sock, or marble when stepping.
  • Pain worsens with activity. Primarily running or hight-impact activities.
  • Painful when walking or standing for long durations.
  • Dull ache that can feel sharp when direct pressure is applied.

Footwear Features for Capsulitis

  • Cushioned Soling
  • Reinforced Forefoot Rocker
  • Wide, rounded toe box to prevent squeezing of the forefoot which can increase pressure on the metatarsal heads
