Onsite Certified Pedorthists
A pedorthist is a medical practitioner who makes and fits special shoe inserts, shoes, and other devices to help reduce pain in your feet, ankles, and legs and help you move better. Pedorthists are experts in biomechanics, human anatomy, and kinesiology, and they work closely with other healthcare professionals to provide the best possible care for their patients.
Certified Practitioners
Pedorthists spend many years in school and training to become experts in helping people with problems with their feet and legs. In Canada, they usually study for four years in Human Kinetics or something similar, and then they have two more years of special training, certification exams and at least 3600 placement hours.
During this time, they gain skills to figure out what's wrong with someone's feet and legs, make custom things like orthotics to help, and recommend the right shoes and related footwear to make people feel better.
What Do Pedorthists Treat?
Pedorthists are experts in making and fitting shoes and orthotics (devices worn inside shoes to support or cushion the feet) to help people with problems with their feet or legs. They focus on relieving areas of the foot with a lot of pressure, which can cause issues like calluses or corns.
Unlike, footcare nurses, who aid in shaving down corns and calluses, our Certified Pedorthist will discover the root cause of why the corn or calluses may have occurred and design an orthotic to unload it in order to prevent it from coming back.
Outside of corns and calluses Certified Pedorthists also treat:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Heel Pain
- Diabetes
- Forefoot Conditions
- Ankle Injuries
- Knee Injuries
- Hip Conditions
- Nerve Impingments in the foot/ankle
- Flat Feet
- Lower Limb Osteoarthritis
They use custom-made orthotics, insoles, or modified shoes to spread the pressure on the foot more evenly and reduce discomfort. They consider many factors when making an orthotic to ensure it works well for each person's unique needs.
One important thing is making sure the orthotic is shaped to fit the foot exactly. It helps spread the pressure on the foot and prevents too much force from going to one area.
When creating custom foot supports, pedorthists often choose the best materials to help reduce skin rubbing and pressure. They are experts at using soft foams or special gels that can cushion the foot and reduce excess stress on areas that get pushed down a lot.
In addition to reducing pressure, pedorthists also focus on making the footwear absorb shock in certain parts of the foot. One common way they do this is by using padding made of materials such as EVA foam, neoprene, or silicone. Using these materials decreases the amount of force that goes to the foot, which can help lower the risk of getting injured or feeling pain.
Pedorthists can also change shoes to help reduce pressure on certain parts of the foot that get squeezed too much. They may add something called a "rocker sole" to the shoe, making it easier to roll your foot when you walk and removing some of the pressure from the front part of the foot.
They can also put special pads called "metatarsal pads" in the shoe to help spread out the pressure around the balls of the feet, stopping painful bumps called "calluses" or "corns" from forming.
Manufacturing Orthotics
As seen earlier, a pedorthist is an expert in creating custom orthotics designed to meet each patient's unique needs. A good one utilizes advanced equipment and materials to ensure that their orthotics are comfortable, long-lasting, and can effectively treat various foot and lower limb conditions.
Brace Fittings
In addition to making custom orthotics, pedorthists can fit patients with personalized braces and other devices. These braces are made to fit perfectly and help support and stabilize the foot and ankle, reducing pain and improving function. They can treat and manage conditions such as plantar fasciitis, ankle instability, and arthritis.
Compression Sock Fittings
Pedorthists are skilled at helping people find the right compression socks. These unique socks are designed to improve blood flow and reduce swelling in the legs and feet, and they can be used to treat conditions such as edema, varicose veins, and lymphedema. A Pedorthist can advise patients on which type of compression sock to choose to ensure it fits properly and feels comfortable.
Orthopaedic Footwear
Pedorthists have a thorough understanding of orthopaedic footwear. They may help patients discover the best shoes and other footwear for their particular needs, whether for daily wear, athletic activity, or work. They are knowledgeable about numerous footwear options and can suggest shoes that provide each patient with the proper support and comfort.
